Seafloor Spreading/Magnetic Stripes
The convection in the magma of the mantle pushes magma to the surface (lava when it reaches the surface), cracking old rocks and creating new rocks and land. It creates mountains on either side. This is a cycle and it forms new rock thus expanding the sea floor.
As the magma goes through convection, it pulls the plates apart, creating more lave coming to the surface and more rock forming. It's a cycle!! Harry Hess discovered this.

Seafloor Spreading
- Harry Hess found rocks that were further away from the ridge were older and the ones closer to the ridge(where magma comes out of) were younger.
Magnetic Stripes
-rocks have iron and magnetite
-magnetic north and south when magnetite cools and hardens it lines up with the magnetic
-poles flip every couple 100,000 years
-when they flip, the magnetite points to the south instead of the north
- in the magnetite, you can see what direction their magnetite is pointing to so you can tell what time period they were from. TIMELINE UNDER THE SEA!

Nail Painting Lab
-Nail on the left, no magnet. Nails on the right, painted with magnet.
